Used Curriculum Sales Help Families Keep Going

One of the ways that HSLDA’s Home School Foundation Ambassadors serve their local homeschooling communities is through raising funds to help struggling families. Often, this takes the form of used curriculum sales.

New Hampshire Volunteers

Recently, two very active ambassadors—Maria Chamberlain of New Hampshire and Carol Gary of Arizona—each spearheaded events in their respective states. The proceeds of their sales, matched by HSF up to $2,000, went into their respective State Ambassador Funds to provide assistance for local homeschooling families facing hard times.

Near and far

Ambassador Chamberlain organized a late summer book sale last year at a playground. Veteran and just-beginning homeschoolers alike had the opportunity to explore hundreds of items donated by local families. Maria’s daughter Abbey, a Youth Ambassador, and other volunteer helpers took cash or checks as happy shoppers checked out feeling pleased with their bargains. While parents shopped, their children enjoyed inflatable games donated by Blast Party Rentals in South Berwick, Maine.

Overall, the event raised enough funds for two local families experiencing serious financial setbacks to receive Ambassador Program grants—allowing them to continue homeschooling their children.

The playground book sale also had far-reaching effects: it provided much-needed help for a hurricane-ravaged homeschooling family in Puerto Rico. A relative of the family saw the promotional sign for the curriculum sale and stopped by. After speaking with this relative, Ambassador Chamberlain set up a community-wide drop-off point for food and hygiene supplies, and the donated goods were personally delivered via local connections to the family in Puerto Rico.

A community effort

This spring, Ambassador Gary and her team of Arizona ambassadors hosted their 6th annual new and used curriculum sale at the YMCA in Glendale. Fifteen ambassadors (including some Youth Ambassadors) worked tirelessly before and during the two-day sale. Families were lining up for the event a full two hours before it opened!

The annual Glendale sale is partially sponsored by community businesses and organizations, including the Arizona Families for Home Education (AFHE). Over the years, more than 100 homeschooling families in Arizona have directly benefited from the thousands and thousands of dollars of proceeds, receiving grants from the Arizona State Ambassador Fund.
