In November of 1999, a father in Virginia learned of the death of a fellow homeschooling father. Burdened by the family's loss, and having heard similar reports in past years of families facing the same hard circumstances, he decided to establish a fund to help widows with the financial costs of homeschooling their children. He presented the idea to the Home School Legal Defense Association, which enthusiastically agreed to its charitable arm, HSF, administering the fund. In March 2000, the Widows Fund was born. It was HSF’s first fund dedicated to giving grants to individual families.

The warm response from HSLDA members and non-members alike has been overflowing. Even children sacrificially give to this fund from their small savings.

“Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress…” James 1:27 (ESV)
