Brave Mom Homeschools Despite Heart Condition, Unemployment
As Kathryn Dillow was browsing social media one day, she came across a heartbreaking story: a young homeschooling mother of four with a chronic and worsening heart condition. Dillow knew she had to take action—and as the Nebraska State Ambassador for Home School Foundation (HSF), she was in a perfect position to help.
Dillow contacted the mother—we’ll call her Moira—and discovered that she needed immediate medical intervention. Since Moira’s husband was unemployed, the family was selling all they could to raise enough money for Moira’s treatment—even to the point of moving into cheaper housing and returning their newly purchased homeschool curriculum.
Thankfully, Dillow was able to act quickly, providing the family with assistance from the HSF Nebraska Ambassador Fund to offset their medical expenses and curriculum purchases. She also encouraged the family to apply to HSF for more help.
And amazingly, after Dillow explained how the HSF was helping this family, two curriculum providers made donations directly to the family. “The reputation of the Home School Foundation is well respected,” Dillow said. “Curriculum providers don’t hesitate to assist when they know the Home School Foundation is involved.”
Not long after, Moira contacted Dillow with exciting news. “We received a check from the [Home School] Foundation this week! Thank you so much! It will help with curriculum and supplies for our daughter’s biology and writing courses. I really appreciate everything the Foundation has done. It has been truly a blessing!”
Since then, Moira has received treatment at the Mayo Clinic and undergone major surgery. She faces another trip to the Mayo Clinic in January 2017. She asks for prayers for her healing and peace for her family as they walk the path set before them.
“I really appreciate your help,” Moira wrote to us. “I will add you to my prayer list and thank the Lord Jesus for compassionate people like you. Thank you so much! I trust in God and in his plan.”
