HSF Ambassador Spotlight Family: A Family Pays it Forward
“Why don’t you consider applying for assistance through the Home School Foundation?” After completing a speaking engagement about “Homeschooling through Hard Times” in 2011 with Mike Smith, President of HSLDA, his words of advice caught me off guard. Yes, we had faced a very difficult year as our oldest son had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia in 2010. Medical bills and other unforeseen costs of coping with such a difficult illness had been a challenging road to travel. But surely there were other people who needed the help more than we did. I was only vaguely familiar with the scope of what HSF provides, so I set aside the idea for a while.
However, the Lord kept placing the option in front of me, and I eventually did apply that year for assistance through HSF’s Compassion Fund. We were blessed and thrilled when the assistance came through at just the right time! Facing another year of deductibles to meet, we were still trying to afford the appropriate school materials for our three sons. The next year, without even asking, our current HSF State Ambassador submitted our family’s name for additional assistance out of the Ambassador State Fund. HSF volunteers and staff continued to follow our family’s journey and pray for us while we helped our son seek treatment at four different internationally-known medical institutions. The prayer cards, e-mails, notes, and special gift for Christmas were so encouraging to us.
Through the generosity of HSF and others, we never worried about whether or not we could continue homeschooling our boys. No matter what state we temporarily lived in while our son received medical treatment, we were all together, making the most of the precious time we had with our son. Even though everything around us was in constant change, our homeschooling structure kept us close and connected as a family. These are the ultimate gifts of what homeschooling and HSF have given to our family, especially in light of our son's passing. We are forever grateful for the love and continued support as the hands and feet of Christ which HSF has given us and so many others. As a result, our gratitude eventually moved me to become the HSF State Ambassador for my state to “pay it forward” in helping other hurting homeschooling families during their time of need.
