Supporting Military Families
This time of year, with Memorial Day and Independence Day behind us and Veterans Day still to come, our thoughts turn not infrequently to the brave men and women in uniform defending us at home and abroad. But we'd be remiss if we didn't remember the families sacrificing alongside them, as the military lifestyle demands unique sacrifices from a spouse and family.
Supporting military families is how the Home School Foundation (HSF) seeks to encourage these courageous men and women. In July 2012, HSF created its Military Fund to offer financial support to homeschooling families of active, retired, reserve, or disabled members of the US Armed Forces. Through this fund, HSF desires to provide service members deployed to training or conflict zones peace of mind concerning their families who remain at home.
More than fifty families have received assistance through this fund in the past year, enabling them to purchase the best curriculum and materials for their children, including those who require expensive specialized equipment due to specific learning needs.
The response to the Military Fund has been overwhelmingly positive on the part of both grant recipients and donors. One retired military officer put it this way: “Now retired after 25 years . . . it’s very nice to find such support here in the land I defended as I navigate the difficult transition to civilian life in a down economy.” As for donors, it’s well known that the military takes care of its own, and to this day, fellow military families represent a significant percentage of the donor base of this fully donor-supported fund.
May God continue to bless America and all those who defend her. To find out more information about grants through this fund or to donate, please visit our Military Fund page.
