New Military Fund
The Home School Foundation is proud to announce the start of a new fund—our Military Fund. This fund assists military homeschool families who are struggling financially to meet their children’s educational needs.
In early 2011, God put it on the hearts of the HSF board members and leadership to start a fund specifically for military families. The details began to come together while simultaneously we heard from donors who wanted to help military homeschoolers.
“We kept hearing stories in the news about families in the military who were being affected by the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many focused on the fact that a fair number of military families are struggling financially,” said Chuck Hurst, executive director of HSF. “We realized that the homeschooling military community, as a microcosm of the larger military community, was in need of assistance to encourage them in homeschooling.”
“We sense that the homeschool military community is continuing to grow. As anecdotal evidence that the military homeschool community is growing, HSLDA offers a discount on membership to military families, and the number of families taking advantage of this discount is continuing to grow,” he said.
The Home School Foundation has previously helped military families that contact us through our other funds, but now will be able to dedicate more attention and focus on these families who sacrifice so much for our freedom.
Families where one or both parents are active, disabled, or retired from any branch of the military are encouraged to apply. Curriculum scholarships are given based on financial need and the availability of funds.
“Our homeschool families are caring and passionate patriots who want the best for our country and for those defending our country,” said Hurst. “Many of them want to express gratitude to these families who serve and may not know how to do so. Now they can by giving to our military fund.”
HSF is currently raising money for this fund and expects to begin giving out grants in June 2012. You can make a donation here. If you are a military family that is struggling financially, feel free to get in touch with us to see if you are eligible. Or if you know a military homeschool family, please tell them about this new fund.
