FUNDS: Widows Fund
Mission
The Widows Fund enables widows to continue homeschooling by helping them with the cost of curriculum and other emergency needs.
Story
| “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress...” — James 1:27 |
In November of 1999, a father in Virginia learned of the death of a fellow homeschooling father. Burdened by the family's loss, this father pondered how he could help. He knew that life after this traumatic event was going to be difficult enough for the man's wife and children without the added worry of how to continue to afford homeschooling curriculum. Having heard similar reports in past years and recognizing that other families were facing the same hard circumstances, he decided to establish a fund to assist widows with the financial costs of homeschooling their children. He presented the idea to the Home School Legal Defense Association, who enthusiastically agreed to help administer the fund. In March 2000, the Widows Fund was born—but it wouldn't have been without the vision and generosity of this homeschooling father—the instigator and first donor.
The response from Home School Legal Defense Association members, as well as nonmembers, has been warm and overflowing. Even children have generously and sacrificially given to this fund from their small savings.
