The Story of the Members Helping Members Fund

Many homeschooling families face the challenges brought on by illnesses, unemployment, and unexpected crises. Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) regularly receives calls from families who express a desire to join or rejoin the organization, but are unable to do so because of various financial limitations. These are heartbreaking calls. At the same time, others continue to call asking how they can reach out to fellow home educators.

How the Funds are Dispersed?

Both groups will be pleased to know that the Home School Foundation, in conjunction with HSLDA, has established a scholarship fund to assist families with HSLDA membership. The Members Helping Members Fund, created in October of 2001 in response to the September 11th attacks and the subsequent negative economic consequences, provides full and partial scholarships to homeschool families who have either been affected by the events or who are suffering from other financial crises. Membership in HSLDA, which costs $115 a year, provides unlimited legal assistance, counsel, and support and other publications with information about current homeschool issues.

How to Apply for a Scholarship?

HSLDA has had the opportunity to assist many families whose financial situation induces them to apply for a scholarship, and we are happy to consider any family’s request for one. Before we can grant a scholarship, however, we require your family to send us two things:

1) A copy of your latest federal income tax return (showing your income), and
2) Details of your current financial situation.

Please understand that we must require this information because of the number of families who request financial assistance. You may send your request to:

Home School Foundation
Attn: Member Scholarship Application
P.O. Box 1152
Purcellville, VA  20134
*Please Note We Do Not Accept Faxes*

We will review this information as soon as we receive it. We award both full and partial scholarships, depending on the availability of funds and your family’s financial situation. Our prayer is that God would richly bless your family and your home school. We look forward to being a part of that blessing.

How to Give to the Scholarship?

If your family has been blessed with financial stability and you would like to extend a helping hand to a fellow homeschooling family, please visit our support page to make a tax-deductible contribution to our Members Helping Members Fund.

We thank those of you who have so generously given in the past and those who are responding to the current need. May God bless you, your family, and your homeschool program!
